As a family photographer, spring is one of the most exciting seasons for me. The fresh bloom, soft light, and vibrant colors make it the perfect time for outdoor maternity and family sessions. In Edmonton, the spring blossom season is brief, usually peaking from mid-May to the end of May. Every year, I share my spring blossom photos, and many people ask me where I take them. So, if you’re looking for the best spots for your next Edmonton family photography session, here are my top five locations:
1. Alberta Legislature Building
The park surrounding the Alberta Legislature Building is a stunning location for spring photography. It features tall, mature trees that create beautiful height contrast between people and nature. While it doesn’t have a dense cluster of blossoms for that dreamy, blurred background, it still provides a picturesque setting for Edmonton family photography. The mix of historical architecture and greenery makes it a versatile spot for both family and maternity sessions.

2. George F. Hustler Memorial Plaza
If you’re looking for a dreamy background filled with blossoms, this is the place to go. This location boasts a large number of apple trees that bloom simultaneously, creating a magical floral canopy. However, because it’s such a popular spot, you’ll often find many people taking pictures, which may limit your shooting angles. Still, with the right timing and positioning, you can capture breathtaking Edmonton family photography moments here.
3. University of Alberta Botanical Garden
I personally love the Japanese Garden section of the University of Alberta Botanical Garden. By the end of May, the apple and plum trees are in full bloom, offering a serene and intimate setting. Unlike busier public parks, this location has fewer people and minimal structures blocking natural light, making it a dream for any Edmonton family photographer. However, if you’re hiring a professional photographer, be sure to check their policies, as permits are required, and the pricing is on the higher side—but it’s definitely worth it!
4. University of Alberta Main Campus
Having spent most of my young adult life at the University of Alberta, I know firsthand that the main campus is a fantastic location for photography. It beautifully blends spring blossoms with historical buildings, making it perfect for capturing timeless family portraits. If you visit on a weekend, you’ll likely have the place to yourself. While I haven’t taken clients here yet—probably because it reminds me of final exams!—it’s a great option for an Edmonton family photography session with a mix of nature and architecture.
5. Muttart Conservatory
Like the Alberta Legislature grounds, you don’t need to go inside the Muttart Conservatory to find a stunning backdrop—the surrounding area is just as beautiful. While I didn’t get a chance to shoot here last year, I’ve scouted the lighting, and I know it works wonderfully for outdoor family photography. If you position yourself well with the lower blossoms, you can create a photo that looks completely immersed in flowers. However, like the Legislature grounds, this location lacks a dense collection of trees for that ultra-dreamy blurred background, but it still offers a fantastic setting for an Edmonton family photographer.
Final Thoughts
Spring in Edmonton is short but breathtaking, making it the perfect time for outdoor photography sessions. Whether you’re a local looking to capture family memories or an Edmonton family photographer scouting for the best locations, these five spots offer incredible opportunities to embrace the beauty of the season.
