Working in newborn photography in Edmonton, I carefully plan each photography newborn session with my clients together, so they know what to expect. My goal is to create images that are timeless, dreamy, and classic—a session that is uniquely yours. Depends on thier need, I will usually plan 5 poses for their newborn baby to do. I let baby lead me to do what they allowed us to do, and we call it baby-leading session.

Before we dive into the poses, it’s important to note that these poses should only be done by a trained professional. Please do not attempt them at home. As a newborn photographer, I have undergone extensive training to ensure that every pose is done safely. While an imperfect pose may not seem like a big deal, an unsafe pose can put your baby at risk. Your baby’s safety is always the top priority.

Pose 1: Side-Lying Pose

This is one of my favorite poses because it allows babies to sleep comfortably while showcasing their delicate facial features. I usually do this pose in the begining of each session. Because this is not a hard pose to do, it will allowed me to know your baby more. I love incorporating small props or a tiny stuffed toy to add a unique touch to each session. The side-lying pose creates a peaceful and angelic look, making it a perfect first choice for dreamy newborn photography.

Pose 2: Bump-Up Pose

Another one of my favorites! This pose highlights your baby’s tiny rolls and adorable curled-up position. It also provides flexibility to create variations with different angles, wraps, and props. I usually transition between the bump-up pose and the side-lying pose smoothly to avoid disturbing the baby’s sleep. Our goal is always to minimize movement and maximize comfort so that the baby remains relaxed throughout the session. Most babies can do these poses as long as they are well-fed and comfortable.

Pose 3: Head-on-Chin Pose

If you’ve ever done tummy time with your baby, you might recognize this position! However, as a professional photographer, I enhance this pose by carefully positioning the baby’s fingers and ensuring a relaxed, peaceful expression. This pose beautifully captures a baby’s tiny hands, soft cheeks, and delicate features in a way that feels both natural and artistic.

Pose 4: Lying-on-Back Pose

This is the most natural pose for a newborn, as babies spend a lot of time lying on their backs in their early days. You might take similar photos on your phone, but what makes professional newborn photography special is the attention to detail. The key to making this pose look adorable is proper angling—I always position the baby’s head closest to the camera to create a soft, dreamy perspective. Additionally, I use gentle support under the baby’s head to enhance their natural features.

Pose 5: Womb Pose

This pose mimics how babies are curled up inside the womb, which is why it’s called the “womb pose.” I always recommend scheduling newborn sessions within the first 5–14 days after birth, as babies naturally lose their flexibility as they grow. Capturing them in this position during their earliest days helps preserve the curled, newborn look that parents love.
