As a family photographer, spring is one of the most exciting seasons for me to photograph. Fresh blooms, soft light, and vibrant colors make it a beautiful time for outdoor family photography in Edmonton.
Spring blossom season here is short, usually peaking between mid-May and the end of May. Every year when I share my spring blossom photos, I get the same question:
“Where were these photos taken?”
If you’re planning an Edmonton family photography session during blossom season, here are my top five favorite locations for spring blooms.
1. Alberta Legislature Building
The park surrounding the Alberta Legislature Building is a classic and elegant location for spring photography. Tall, mature trees create beautiful height and depth, giving photos a timeless feel.
While this area doesn’t have a dense cluster of blossoms for a fully blurred floral background, the mix of historic architecture and greenery makes it a versatile option for both family and maternity photography in Edmonton.
Best for:
Families who love a clean, elegant look with a mix of nature and architecture.

2. George F. Hustler Memorial Plaza
If you’re dreaming of a background filled with blossoms, this is one of the best spots in the city. With rows of apple trees blooming at the same time, it creates a magical floral canopy that feels almost unreal.
Because it’s such a popular location, it can get busy during peak bloom. That means we need to be mindful of timing and angles, but with the right approach, it’s absolutely possible to capture beautiful, intimate Edmonton family photography moments here.
Best for:
Families who want that dreamy, blossom-filled look and don’t mind a popular location.

3. University of Alberta Botanical Garden
The Japanese Garden area at the University of Alberta Botanical Garden is one of my personal favorites. By late May, the apple and plum trees are usually in full bloom, creating a peaceful and intimate atmosphere.
Compared to public parks, this location is quieter and has fewer structures blocking natural light, which makes it ideal for relaxed, storytelling-style sessions. Keep in mind that photography permits are required, and fees can be higher, but the experience and results are worth it.
Best for:
Families looking for a serene, refined setting with minimal distractions.
4. University of Alberta Main Campus
Having spent much of my early adult life at the University of Alberta, I know the campus well. It’s a beautiful location for spring photography. The combination of historic buildings, pathways, and blooming trees creates a timeless backdrop for family portraits.
Weekends are especially great if you prefer a quieter environment. While I haven’t photographed many client sessions here yet (final exams still haunt me a little!), it’s a wonderful option for families who love a blend of nature and architecture.
Best for:
Families who want a classic, editorial feel with spring blossoms.
5. Muttart Conservatory Grounds
You don’t need to go inside the Muttart Conservatory to find a beautiful spring photography location. The surrounding grounds offer lovely blossoms and great light, especially when positioned carefully with lower branches in the foreground.
While this area doesn’t have dense rows of trees for a fully blurred background, it’s still a fantastic option for outdoor family photography in Edmonton, especially for families who want something a little different from the usual park settings.
Best for:
Families who want a unique backdrop with strong visual interest.

Final Thoughts on Spring Blossom Photography in Edmonton
Spring in Edmonton is short but incredibly beautiful, which makes blossom season one of the most popular times for family photography sessions. Whether you’re hoping for a dreamy floral background or a mix of architecture and nature, these locations offer wonderful options for capturing meaningful family memories.
If you’re thinking about booking a spring family photography session in Edmonton, I recommend planning early! Blossom season moves fast, and timing is everything.
