If you are searching for a newborn photographer in Edmonton, you might notice that some charge $300 while others charge $1,500 or more. Skill level is definitely one reason why an experienced photographer charges more than a beginner. But as a parent, what really matters?

As a newborn photographer in Edmonton, I’ve photographed hundreds of babies over the years. I’ve also been on the other side of the camera, trying to choose photographers for my own family.

When parents start comparing newborn photographers, most people immediately look at price or style. But in my opinion, there are a few other things that matter just as much, if not more.

Newborn Photography Safety: What Every Parent Should Know

I decided to put safety first, even ahead of budget.

You probably hear photographers talk about safety all the time. But I rarely see people discuss it from a parent’s perspective. Maybe that’s because newborns tend to move less than toddlers. They can’t run, they can’t climb, and they can’t roll very far. It might seem less dangerous to pose a newborn than to photograph an active toddler.

And most newborn photographers make it look effortless.

But the truth is that newborns have sudden reflexes. They can unexpectedly move out of a pose, which is why there should always be an extra hand nearby to ensure their safety. When posing a newborn, you also need to know where to support them, where not to touch them, when to support them, and where to place posing aids to keep them safe and comfortable.

Some poses that look simple in the final image are actually composite images created from multiple photos. A baby’s safety should always come before getting the perfect pose.

But surprisingly, there is no law in Canada—or at least in Alberta—that requires a newborn photographer to complete a safety course or specific training.

Can you believe that?

It makes finding a reliable photographer much harder. There is no universal standard to tell you whether a photographer is experienced enough to pose your baby safely.

Many photographers and organizations offer newborn safety training and provide certificates to people who complete their courses. As an experienced photographer, do I completely trust a certificate on its own? Probably not.

The challenge is that newborn photography is not a regulated profession. There is no official organization creating a universal safety standard that every newborn photographer must follow. Different educators teach different methods, and the quality of training can vary a lot from course to course.

That’s actually one of the reasons I decided to take both infant first aid certification and newborn photography safety training. I wanted to learn from multiple sources and continue building my knowledge rather than relying on a single certificate.

At the end of the day, having safety-related certifications is still much better than having none. It shows that a photographer cares enough to invest time and money into learning. But an even more reliable method is to check their website and see how much they talk about safety. I would probably ask myself why a newborn photographer doesn’t mention safety very often.

Also check their social media for behind-the-scenes content. You’ll be able to see whether they are gentle enough, confident enough, and, most importantly, experienced enough.

In my opinion, I’d rather skip the session entirely than hand my baby to someone who cannot guarantee safety. A newborn is not a toy. It’s a fragile little human being.

Never risk your baby’s safety for anything.

How Clean and Sanitized Is the Newborn Photography Studio?

Cleaning is another important aspect.

We use a lot of props in a newborn session. I mean, a lot!

You’re definitely not going to watch a photographer wash everything after every session. But they should absolutely tell you that everything is washed and sanitized before your session.

Let’s not even talk about how underdeveloped a newborn’s immune system is. Sometimes we do a lot of naked poses. If a baby pees or poops, everything gets washed. That’s obvious.

But what if the previous baby didn’t pee or poop on the prop?

Personally, I think babies are probably the cleanest little creatures in the world. But for sanitation reasons, I still wash everything and dry it in the dryer before using it again. I want to make sure my next little client doesn’t have to touch someone else’s skin cells.

Again, this is something that’s very hard to tell just by browsing someone’s website. And you probably don’t want to sound disrespectful by asking, “Do you wash your stuff?”

So check behind-the-scenes content if possible. Or simply ask politely:

“Hi, I know this might be a little detailed, but how do you clean your outfits and props? My baby might have sensitive skin because it runs in our family, so I just wanted to make sure.”

Understanding Newborn Photography Pricing and Budget

Even though I’m a photographer myself, I still need to pay someone to take my family photos.

As a customer, this is the point where we’re all trying to decide whether the price is something we can afford.

If a photographer happens to have my favorite style and is within my budget, that’s perfect.

But what if she charges more than my ideal price? What if she charges a lot more than I can afford?

Every photographer says those first few days are precious and worth every penny. And honestly, they’re not wrong.

But the truth is that life still has to keep going. We want to hold onto those memories forever, but we also need to live. Sometimes a good newborn photographer can charge what feels like my entire month’s salary.

Do I like her work?

Yes.

Can I afford it?

Maybe not.

And that’s okay. That doesn’t mean you’re failing at adult life, and it certainly doesn’t mean you’re not a good parent. After all, you’re paying for a product that matches your needs. We can buy a $0.20 plastic bag, and there are still people buying Hermes bags. Both are designed to hold things.

So choose a photographer whose style you love and whose pricing fits your budget. You’ll enjoy the experience much more instead of worrying about every dollar and not being able to fully enjoy the process.

Choosing a Timeless Newborn Photography Style

Style and budget are actually equally important.

I only choose a style that speaks to my heart.

If it’s within my budget but I don’t like the style, I’ll simply skip the photoshoot.

Yes, the newborn stage is precious. That’s exactly why we only want to pay for photographs that will truly remind us of those tiny details decades later.

As a newborn photographer, I talk about “timeless” photography all the time on my website because I believe it’s one of the most important parts of newborn photography.

Those soft baby hairs and tiny fingers will never be this small again.

But when you look back at those photos 20 years from now, you don’t want your memories interrupted by outdated props, trendy outfits, or decorations that immediately reveal what year the photo was taken.

In my mind, a newborn photographer should be able to choose props, headbands, outfits, and decorations that highlight your baby’s beauty without putting a timestamp on the image.

Newborn Photos should Speaks to You

I know some newborn photographers have tons of sets available. You pick your favorite, they place the baby in it, click the button, and the photo is done.

And yes, that set might be your favorite out of all the available options.

But do you truly love every element in that set?

Does it actually reflect your taste?

I don’t believe newborn photography should be copy-and-paste because it’s such a personal and precious memory.

The setup should make sense to you.

Maybe it includes the season your baby was born.

Maybe it includes something meaningful from your wedding.

Maybe it reflects the wishes and dreams you have for your baby.

As a newborn photographer, I’ve photographed hundreds of newborns, and I’ve never had two families ask for exactly the same thing.

Sometimes the ideas are very similar.

But somehow, they always end up becoming something different.

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, there is no perfect newborn photographer.

Someone might have the safest workflow, but their style isn’t what you love. Someone might create beautiful images, but they’re outside your budget. Someone else might be affordable, but maybe you don’t connect with their work.

And that’s okay.

I don’t think there is one photographer who is right for every family. Just like there is no one way to raise a child, there is no one right way to photograph a newborn.

Whether you’re looking for a luxury newborn photographer in Edmonton or simply trying to find someone who fits your family’s budget, I hope these points help make the decision a little easier.

My hope is simply that when you choose a newborn photographer, you look beyond the photos on the front page. Ask about safety. Ask about cleaning. Think about your budget. Think about whether the style still feels beautiful to you 20 years from now.

Most importantly, choose someone you trust.

Because while the photos will last a lifetime, your baby is only this tiny for a few days. That part matters far more than any photo we will ever create.
