When parents bring their little ones into my studio for an Edmonton newborn photoshoot, there’s one part of the session I always get especially excited about: capturing all the tiny little details.
Those delicate eyelashes, wrinkly fingers, button noses, flaky skin, and teeny tiny toes. These are the things that change so quickly during the first few weeks. Capturing those little details always feels incredibly meaningful to me. With a macro lens, we’re able to freeze these fleeting moments in time before they disappear.

Only Macro Lenses
Years later, when your baby is running around the backyard, talking nonstop, and growing into their own little person, you’ll still be able to look back and remember just how impossibly small and perfect they once were.
I know many parents say:
“I can just use my phone to take those detail photos.”
And honestly, yes, phones today are amazing. But capturing true newborn macro photography is very different. You need a specialized lens that allows you to get extremely close while still keeping every tiny detail beautifully sharp.
Not every lens can do that.
After so many years photographing newborns, I’ve realized a macro lens is probably one of the least practical lenses for everyday life… but one of the most important lenses for newborn photography.
Honestly, I think only newborn photographers would spend that much money on such a “useless” lens. But the moment you use one on a newborn baby, you understand why.
A regular lens can photograph your baby’s hand. Even your phone can probably do that.
But a macro lens lets you come unbelievably close, almost like those first few days as a parent, when you can’t stop staring at every little detail of your tiny human.
You notice the peeling newborn skin.
The soft fuzzy hair on their shoulders.
The tiny wrinkles on their fingers.
The way their eyelashes curl against their cheeks while they sleep.
Every single day, your baby changes.
At first, they have that soft pink newborn skin and fluffy little hairs everywhere. Then suddenly, without you even noticing, the newborn look slowly disappears and turns into a baby look instead.
Tiny Details, Big Emotions
Macro newborn photos always bring parents back to those early days.
You may remember feeding your baby in the middle of the night and staring at the side of their tiny nose, wondering:
“How can something be this small?”
Or maybe you looked at their perfect little eyelashes and thought:
“These lashes are prettier than mine.”
Those tiny moments are what make parenthood feel real and unforgettable.
The first few weeks are exhausting. You wake up every two hours, running on almost no sleep, holding your baby half awake in the middle of the night. Everything feels blurry and chaotic. And somehow, time still moves way too fast. You barely get a chance to slowly take in all those tiny little details before they start changing.
Then one day, years later, you open your newborn photo album again.
You see the same angle of their face you used to stare at while feeding them. The tiny lashes. The fuzzy little cheeks. The wrinkly fingers that once wrapped around yours.
It’s such a small moment, but it softens your heart immediately.
Meanwhile your kids are outside running through the backyard, laughing during water fights with their siblings, and suddenly you realize just how beautiful and full your life has become.
Those photos may not even show your baby’s full face, sometimes they only capture the tiniest details. But it’s exactly those emotional connections and meaningful little moments that make this photography experience feel truly luxurious. I also wrote another blog sharing my thoughts on what a luxury newborn photography session should really feel like.
They Change Faster Than You Think
One thing I always love including in macro newborn photography is parents holding their baby’s tiny hands or feet.
Not only does it show just how unbelievably small they are, but it also captures the connection parents build with their baby during those first few days together.
Those tiny details change incredibly fast.
During the first couple of weeks, newborn skin slowly peels and changes into smoother baby skin. Their fluffy newborn hair starts disappearing. Their fingers and toes are still tiny after the first month — but somehow not that tiny anymore.
And before you realize it, the newborn stage is already gone.
Final Thoughts
Newborn photography is never only about perfect poses or sleepy smiles for me. It’s about remembering all the little things parents are scared they might forget someday.
The tiny lashes.
The wrinkly toes.
The flaky newborn skin.
The way their whole hand could wrap around one finger.
These details may feel small now, but one day they will mean everything.
That’s why I always include macro newborn photography in my sessions. Because while babies grow unbelievably fast, these photographs allow us to hold onto just a little piece of those first days forever.
And years from now, when your baby is no longer a newborn, these tiny details will bring you right back to the beginning.
